Book, Music & Lyrics by Alex Ratner
Welcome to Highgarden, oasis of female leadership and sexual tolerance within a not-too-distant medieval patriarchy. A musical parody-prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones, this one-act chamber piece tells the untold backstory of House Tyrell before the series begins. Of all the Great Houses of Westeros, House Tyrell is the only one led by a woman, Olenna Tyrell, who is busy grooming her grandchildren Loras and Margaery for greatness. Commenting on Margaery’s objectification, Loras’s double life as the closeted “Knight of Flowers” and Olenna’s role as resident battle-ax grandma, Tyrell imagines what these secondary characters were thinking all along.

CONCEPT ALBUM
Early one morning at Highgarden, as Margaery practices a popular madrigal in Westeros on the harp, Loras surprises her with an unannounced visit from the capital, King’s Landing.
Alone with his sister, Loras broaches the subject of marriage, whereupon Margaery reveals her desire to marry Prince Joffrey and become the next Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
Brooding over Margaery’s revelation, Loras vows to protect his sister from Prince Joffrey, though he struggles to reconcile his knightly image with his newfound feelings for Renly Baratheon.
Olenna, having anticipated her granddaughter’s royal aspirations, tutors Margaery in the art of sexual politics, strategizing ways to win support for her as the next queen of Westeros.
The Tyrells reflect on the cautionary tale of the Reynes of Castamere, who perished when they defied the Lannisters, as Loras claims Margaery would do as Joffrey’s wife.
Chastened by the story of the Reynes of Castamere, Margaery tries practicing the harp, but finds herself chafing at the limited prospects for women in the Seven Kingdoms.

When Loras asks Olenna how she could understand his feelings for Renly, given her loveless marriage, Olenna reveals the truth of her one-time engagement to Prince Daeron Targaryen.
