Alex is a New York-based musical theatre writer, music director and arranger. Alex graduated from Yale in 2015, where he wrote music and lyrics for three new musicals, including Glass Act, inspired by J.D. Salinger’s “Glass Family” stories, and an adaptation of the bestselling novel White Oleander (sublicense from Warner Brothers Theatre Ventures).
The third musical, Stone and Sparrow, was developed through the Shen Curriculum for Musical Theatre at Yale as the Theatre Department’s premiere faculty-directed original musical, mounted through a production seminar in April 2014. Stone and Sparrow was a winner of the New Voices Project, a developmental program sponsored by New Musicals, Inc. and Walt Disney Imagineering, and was most recently selected for Berklee College of Music’s faculty-led New Works Ensemble program, culminating in a December 2019 performance.
Alex is a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Advanced Workshop, in which he received the 2016 Jerry Harrington Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement, as well as the 2017 Jean Banks Award for his original ten-minute musical, Salad Days. Alex was the featured composer in the Broadway’s Future Songbook series at Lincoln Center in February 2019, and his work has been featured in concert at Symphony Space, Feinstein’s/54 Below, Green Room 42, Urban Stages, NYMF and Stagedoor Manor (which he attended from 2002-09).
As an arranger, Alex adapted the score of Stephen Schwartz’s Children of Eden, Junior for MTI’s Broadway Junior Collection, and wrote a cappella arrangements as a member of the Yale Whiffenpoofs, the nation’s oldest a cappella singing group. His teaching artist experience includes work with Disney Musicals in Schools, an arts education initiative of Disney Theatrical Group which jumpstarts theatre programs in underserved public elementary schools across the country.
Alex’s latest project is Tyrell, a musical parody-prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones, which received a staged workshop at Dixon Place in March 2019 and premiered in London as part of MTFestUK in February 2020. A concept album of highlights from Tyrell, starring two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole (War Paint, Grey Gardens), can be found on all streaming platforms.
Alex served as Associate Music Director on two concerts in the 92Y’s Lyrics & Lyricists series - The Bobby Darin Story, starring Jonathan Groff, and Lenny’s Lyricists, featuring the work of Leonard Bernstein - and he music directed the world premiere of Columbus Is Happening by Tony-winning writer Stew (Passing Strange), performed in concert in June 2019 at Joe’s Pub. Other credits include: War Paint (Broadway), Far From Heaven (Williamstown Theatre Festival; Playwrights Horizons) and The Flamingo Kid (Hartford Stage).
